6 ways to reduce your carbon footprint for MS and Chromatography

As lab professionals, we are sure you know the need to help safeguard our environment. That’s why choosing more sustainable and environmentally friendly lab equipment and practices are now a priority, not just for cost savings but also for reducing your carbon footprint.

While some waste and consumption are unavoidable, below are some examples of a few minor changes in your laboratory that can make a big difference for our planet.

How can you reduce your carbon footprint in the laboratory?

Using multi-vendor service

You can cover all leading manufacturers instruments, including Waters/MicromassAgilent/VarianBrukerThermoAB Sciex & PEAK, under a single contract with ex-manufacturer or third party trained engineers by using an independent service company such as KRSS. Some OEM’s also provide multi-vendor service. This single-source approach not only reduces the number of engineers travelling to your laboratory but can also help mitigate Covid-19 exposure risks by making your lab more independent, reduced outside contact for a safer and more efficient work environment.

Buying used, refurbished & approved (KRSS) instruments

By buying a used Mass Spec, Chromatography or Gas Generator, you are helping to recycle. You can also reduce waste by making sure you sell your used equipment to a company like KRSS who will recycle them as a whole or in parts. An older Mass Spec Chromatography or Gas Generator can deliver the same analysis as a brand new system depending on your requirements but with significant savings. Read our article 10 Reasons you should buy refurbished #MassSpectrometry, #Chromatography Systems and Gas Generators.

Gas Generators instead of cylinders

By purchasing a used, refurbished and KRSS approved Gas Generator we have already mentioned, you help reduce waste by recycling. In addition, by eliminating recurring multiple cylinder deliveries, you can reduce your lab’s overall carbon footprint. Compared to Gas Cylinders, you will be working towards more sustainable and environmentally-friendly laboratory practices.

To summarise the advantages there are, no repeat deliveries, gas is generated on-demand, therefore no waste and it’s a renewable resource.

Labs requiring 32 L/min of nitrogen for 5 days a week for 8 hours a day for their LC-MS instrument could save approximately 450 cylinders requiring delivery per year if they switched to a Gas Generator. Fewer deliveries to your laboratory can also help mitigate Covid-19 exposure risks by making your lab more independent, reduced outside contact for a safer and more efficient work environment.

Making laboratory gas is cheaper than buying it!

Remote Support

Using an independent service provider to cover multiple technologies and manufacturers, as mentioned above, can reduce the number of engineers required to visit. How about no engineers? Remote support via products such as Teamviewer and teams means that the engineer doesn’t even need to see your laboratory. On average, we fix 70% of customer breakdowns remotely using video diagnostics and remote control software. We can even ship parts and guide users through installation. You can also utilise remote support for training and troubleshooting. There is no need for a physical visit to your facility to help mitigate Covid-19 exposure risks by reducing outside contact.

Remote Installation

Imagine you purchased a used, refurbished and KRSS approved Mass Spec from KRSS; how about installing it remotely. As a customer, you save install, labour and travel cost because we save on travel costs. For example, KRSS recently installed a used Mass Spectrometer in the USA from the UK using teams and video conferencing due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. By taking our time and using bite-sized videos and multiple training sessions over several weeks, we installed and thoroughly trained a lab on using their KRSS: Renewed system.

Reconditioned & KRSS Approved Parts

Extend the life of your instruments, including Mass Spec, Chromatography & Gas Generators. Third-party parts providers (such as KRSS) can supply refurbished parts again at huge savings compared to new ones. We can also provide parts, including turbosvacuum pumpsboards and power supplies that are no longer available from the OEM.
